Convert PNG to WebP

WebP does everything PNG does - lossless if you want it, transparency included - in a file that's usually a third smaller. The catch is age: anything built before about 2020 may not open it. Fine for the web, risky for handing to someone else's software.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is WebP?

Google's format for the web, and a genuine improvement on both of the formats it replaces: lossy like JPG or lossless like PNG, transparency either way, and usually about 30% smaller. Every current browser reads it. Software that stopped being updated around 2019 often doesn't.
