Convert PNG to BMP

BMP stores pixels raw, one after another, with no compression at all. The file gets much bigger. The reason to do it is old software - industrial tools, embedded displays, ancient Windows utilities - that will accept nothing else.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is BMP?

The Windows bitmap, which stores pixels raw with no compression worth mentioning. Files are enormous. It survives because it's trivial to read - if you're writing an image loader from scratch or feeding an embedded display, BMP is the format that needs no library.
