Convert PNG to JPG

PNG keeps every pixel exactly; JPG throws some away to get small. On a photo that trade is worth it - expect the file to shrink by 80% or more. On a screenshot of text it isn't, and you'll see the difference around the letters. Transparency doesn't survive: JPG has no alpha channel, so anything see-through is filled in.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.
