Convert PNG to PPM

PPM writes the pixels out as plain uncompressed RGB behind a four-line header. It's the format you convert to when something needs to read pixels without a decoder in the way - a script, a student assignment, a bit of C you wrote yourself.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is PPM?

Uncompressed RGB behind a four-line text header - about as simple as an image format can be while still being one. Nobody ships PPM to users; it exists as the thing scripts and teaching code write when they'd rather not link an image library.
