Convert PNG to PBM

PBM is one bit per pixel: every pixel ends up pure black or pure white, with nothing in between. Photographs turn to mush. Line art, scanned documents and logos survive it well, which is what it's for.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is PBM?

One bit per pixel - black or white, nothing in between. The most minimal image format in common use, and still the right one for scanned documents, line art and anything headed into OCR or shape analysis. Photographs do not survive it.
