Convert PNG to PGM

PGM is greyscale and nothing else, so the colour goes on the way through. It's a research and image-processing format - no compression, a header you can read in a text editor, and pixel values you can do arithmetic on without decoding anything first.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is PGM?

Greyscale, uncompressed, with a header you can read in a text editor. PGM is part of the netpbm family, and it exists because sometimes you want pixel values you can do arithmetic on without a decoder in the way. Image processing and computer vision code loves it.
