Convert PNG to TGA

Targa is still standard in game pipelines and older 3D tools, which often want their textures as TGA and nothing else. It keeps the alpha channel, so a texture with transparency comes through intact.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.

What is TGA?

Targa dates to 1984 and refuses to die, because game engines and 3D packages standardised on it for textures and never had a reason to move. It keeps an alpha channel, optionally compresses runs of identical pixels, and is simple enough that every tool reads it.
