Convert TGA to PNG

Targa is a game and 3D format that most ordinary software has forgotten about. PNG holds the same pixels and the same alpha channel losslessly, and everything opens it - so this is the standard way to get a texture out into the wider world.

What is TGA?

Targa dates to 1984 and refuses to die, because game engines and 3D packages standardised on it for textures and never had a reason to move. It keeps an alpha channel, optionally compresses runs of identical pixels, and is simple enough that every tool reads it.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.
