Convert JPG to PNG

This won't undo the compression. Whatever a JPG lost when it was saved is gone for good, and PNG just stores the damage losslessly at a much larger size. Worth doing when you're about to edit: every JPG re-save degrades a little further, and PNG stops that.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.
