Convert BMP to PNG

Almost always a size win - BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, and PNG compresses them without losing anything, so the image is identical and the file is a fraction of the size. There's no reason to keep a BMP once you have this.

What is BMP?

The Windows bitmap, which stores pixels raw with no compression worth mentioning. Files are enormous. It survives because it's trivial to read - if you're writing an image loader from scratch or feeding an embedded display, BMP is the format that needs no library.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.
