Convert JPG to PBM

One bit per pixel - black or white, nothing between. A photograph becomes a harsh, speckled version of itself. It's the right conversion for scanned text and line art, and the wrong one for almost everything else.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.

What is PBM?

One bit per pixel - black or white, nothing in between. The most minimal image format in common use, and still the right one for scanned documents, line art and anything headed into OCR or shape analysis. Photographs do not survive it.
