Convert JPG to WebP

The usual reason is size - WebP typically gets 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same visible quality. Because both are lossy, you're re-compressing something already compressed, so start from the best JPG you have rather than one that's been through a few rounds.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.

What is WebP?

Google's format for the web, and a genuine improvement on both of the formats it replaces: lossy like JPG or lossless like PNG, transparency either way, and usually about 30% smaller. Every current browser reads it. Software that stopped being updated around 2019 often doesn't.
