Convert JPG to ICO

Photos make poor icons - JPG has no transparency, so you get a square, and its artifacts show badly once scaled to 32 pixels. It works, but a PNG with a clean transparent background will look considerably better.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.

What is ICO?

Windows icons, and a container rather than an image - one file holds the same icon at several sizes, so Windows can pick the right one for a title bar or a desktop. It tops out at 256x256 and supports transparency, which is what stops an icon looking like a sticker.
