How it works
Drop in a photo, drag it and zoom up to 400% until your face sits in the circle, and see it in circles 96, 48 and 32 pixels across, about the sizes apps show it at beside a profile, a post and a comment. Most apps cut a profile picture to a circle themselves, so the square picture is usually what to upload.
A ring, and see-through corners
Turn on Border for a coloured ring round the circle, 1% to 12% of the picture's width (40 pixels at the default 4% on a 1000-pixel picture). Cut to a circle makes the corners see-through, for a website, a slide or a game that shows the picture as it is.
Which size
1000 × 1000 is plenty for every app, which shrinks it to between about 40 and 400 pixels across. 400 × 400 makes a smaller file for places with an upload limit, such as some forums. Both save as PNG, named after the photo (holiday-profile-1000.png).
Questions
Do I need to cut it to a circle?
Usually not. Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Discord cut the picture to a circle themselves. A few places fill see-through corners with black or white, so upload the square version there.
Why PNG and not JPG?
Only PNG keeps see-through corners, and it keeps the edge of the ring sharp. A profile picture is small, so the PNG stays small too.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is cropped and saved in this page, on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
