Convert MP4 to WebM

Re-encodes H.264 video as VP9, which is royalty-free and what a self-hosted web page usually wants. Expect a somewhat smaller file for the same quality, and a slower conversion, since VP9 works harder. The soundtrack comes with it, re-encoded as Opus.

What is MP4?

The container video actually travels in: what phones record, what messaging apps accept, what every player since the iPod era opens. It usually carries H.264 video and AAC audio. Its one structural quirk matters to converters - the index of every frame lives in a table that has to be exactly right, or nothing plays.

What is WebM?

Google's royalty-free video container, built for the web and carrying VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus audio. Every modern browser plays it without a plugin or a licence, which is why it's the sensible choice for video you host yourself and a poor one for video you send to someone's phone.
