Convert MP4 to MP3

Lifts the soundtrack out of a video and leaves the picture behind. The audio inside an MP4 is usually AAC, so this is a re-encode rather than a copy - fine at a reasonable bitrate. Everything happens on your machine, which matters more here than usual: this is the conversion people normally hand a video to a stranger's website for.

What is MP4?

The container video actually travels in: what phones record, what messaging apps accept, what every player since the iPod era opens. It usually carries H.264 video and AAC audio. Its one structural quirk matters to converters - the index of every frame lives in a table that has to be exactly right, or nothing plays.

What is MP3?

The format that made digital music portable, and thirty years on it's still the safest bet that a file will simply play - any device, any car, any decade-old bit of hardware. It's lossy, its patents expired in 2017, and no browser has ever been able to write one, which is why encoding it here needs LAME.
