Convert HEIC to JPG

The conversion iPhone photos exist to need. HEIC stores a photo at about half the size of the equivalent JPG, which is why Apple switched to it - and why so little else opens one. JPG is understood by everything ever made. The photo is re-compressed on the way, so do this once from the original rather than repeatedly.

What is HEIC?

What an iPhone saves photos as. It isn't really an image format so much as a container holding HEVC video frames - the same codec used for film, applied to one still. That gets a photo to about half the size of the equivalent JPG, and it's also why so little else opens one: HEVC is patent-licensed, so most browsers and a lot of desktop software can't read a HEIC at all. Big photos are usually stored cut into tiles that have to be reassembled.

What is JPG?

JPEG is where photographs live. Its compression is lossy - it throws away detail the eye is bad at noticing, and throws away a bit more every time you re-save - which buys huge size savings on photos and makes a mess of screenshots and text. There's no transparency in it at all.
