Convert AVIF to PNG

AVIF is remarkably small but still young enough that plenty of software won't touch it. PNG is the opposite on both counts, which makes this the usual fix when something refuses to open an AVIF. Transparency survives; the file gets considerably bigger.

What is AVIF?

Built on the AV1 video codec, and the smallest of the widely-supported image formats by a clear margin - frequently half the size of a JPG that looks the same. It handles transparency and HDR. Being new is its only real drawback: plenty of software still won't open one.

What is PNG?

PNG is the web's lossless image format. It compresses without ever degrading the picture and has a real alpha channel, which is why screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text belong in it. The trade is size: on a photograph, PNG is enormous compared to JPG.
