Convert GIF to WebM

Same idea as MP4 and usually a little smaller again, using VP9 instead of H.264. MP4 is the safer choice for messaging apps and older devices; WebM is the better one for a web page you control.

What is GIF?

Thirty-five years old and still everywhere, because it does one thing nothing else quite does: animate inline, silently, in any context that displays an image. The cost is a 256-colour palette and no real motion compression, which makes GIF a poor way to store video and an excellent way to send a three-second loop.

What is WebM?

Google's royalty-free video container, built for the web and carrying VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus audio. Every modern browser plays it without a plugin or a licence, which is why it's the sensible choice for video you host yourself and a poor one for video you send to someone's phone.
