    Chicago bibliography entry

    A book in Chicago

A Chicago bibliography entry gives the author, the title, then the facts of publication, each part ending in a full stop. For a book that is the city and the publisher joined by a colon, then the year: Levitt, Steven D., and Stephen J. Dubner. Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything. New York: William Morrow, 2005. Fill in the City box for the place; left empty, the entry gives the publisher alone. Up to ten authors are all listed, and past ten the first seven are followed by et al.

    Journal articles and web pages

An article title goes in quotation marks and the journal in italics, followed by the volume, the issue, the date in brackets, a colon and the pages: Walker, Matthew P., and Robert Stickgold. “Sleep-Dependent Learning and Memory Consolidation.” Neuron 44, no. 1 (September 2004): 121–133. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2004.08.031. A web page gives the site name and its date as separate parts, and adds the day you looked at it only when the page shows no date. A video names its platform: YouTube video, September 15, 2019.

    Questions

    Does it write footnotes?

No, only the bibliography entry. A full note takes the same facts in another order, first name first, joined by commas, with the publication facts in brackets and the page you used: 1. Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (New York: William Morrow, 2005), 45. Later notes to the same book can be short: Levitt and Dubner, Freakonomics, 45.

    What about Chicago author-date?

This page writes the notes-and-bibliography form used in history and the arts. The author-date form, common in the sciences, moves the year to straight after the authors (Levitt, Steven D., and Stephen J. Dubner. 2005. Freakonomics ...) and drops it from the end, which you can do by hand after pasting.

    Is Turabian the same?

Turabian is Chicago adapted for student papers, and its bibliography entries follow the same pattern, so these entries suit a Turabian paper too.
