Hours between two times

Pick a start and an end time. When the end is earlier than the start, it is taken as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. Put an unpaid break in minutes to take it off: 09:00 to 17:30 less a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours.

Decimal hours

The answer is shown in hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which is what most payroll sheets ask for: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. To turn minutes into decimal hours, divide by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 is 0.33, 30 is 0.5 and 45 is 0.75.

One shift at a time

This works out one span between two clock times. For a week of shifts, work out each day here and add the totals on the Hours and Minutes Calculator, which takes a list.

Questions

Does it handle shifts past midnight?

Yes. An end time earlier than the start is read as the next day. A shift longer than 24 hours cannot be given as two clock times; add it up as hours instead.

Can I use 12-hour times?

The time boxes follow your device's clock setting, so they show AM and PM where that is the norm. The line under the answer gives both times in 12-hour form.

How is the break taken off?

Once, in minutes, from the whole span, and the answer never goes below zero. Leave paid breaks out.
